Understanding Dynamic Viscosity & Fluid Shear Mechanics
Dynamic viscosity (symbolized as or ), also known as absolute viscosity, is a measure of a fluid's internal resistance to shear flow. When a fluid is subjected to an applied force, dynamic viscosity quantifies the ratio between the resulting shear stress and the local velocity gradient across fluid layers.
Newton's Law of Viscosity & Laminar Flow
For Newtonian fluids undergoing laminar planar shear, viscosity is governed by Newton's Law of Viscosity:
where is shear stress in pascals (Pa), $u$ is flow velocity, and $y$ is the perpendicular distance between sheared boundaries. In pipe flow, dynamic viscosity dictates pressure loss through the Hagen-Poiseuille equation: , showing that doubling viscosity directly doubles pumping power requirements.
Standard Units & Conversion Scales
- SI Standard: Pascal-second () or newton-second per square meter (). $1\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s} = 1\text{ N}\cdot\text{s}/\text{m}^2 = 1\text{ kg}/(\text{m}\cdot\text{s})$.
- CGS Metric: Poise () and centipoise (). $1\text{ P} = 0.1\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s}$; $1\text{ cP} = 1\text{ mPa}\cdot\text{s} = 0.001\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s}$. Pure liquid water at $20^\circ\text{C}$ has a dynamic viscosity of almost exactly $1.0\text{ cP}$.
- Imperial Engineering: Pound-force second per square foot () or pound per foot-second (). $1\text{ lbf}\cdot\text{s}/\text{ft}^2 \approx 47.88026\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s}$.
